Just called IRS regarding a client’s refund. I was asked by the Agent for not only my PTIN but my social security number and date of birth, told him was uncomfortable with this but he stated these are new requirements for 3rd Party Designee. Anyone else have this experience or heard of it?

    Deborah:

This is not that new. The tax committee has expressed our lack of comfort with this. For the time being, there is no choice.

Deborah:  This has been happening since last fall.  We discussed this issue at last fall's tax meeting held down in Florida.

As POA, I've also been asked MY home address and MY filing status on MY tax return - getting very intrusive!

On a positive note, they are not asking for DNA.

This has been the procedure for months.  The IRS states security as the reason.

Deborah, as noted above this procedure has been in effect for over a year now.  When it went into effect, many CPAs were concerned about the type of info being requested.  However, please note that this is a result of the fraudsters having breached practitioner data and calling the IRS impersonating practitioners.  The info being requested is not on any POA, so if that had been compromised, this other info is not readily available.

while answering the data may be viewed as intrusive, it is needed right now to ensure that TP data is not provided to the fraudsters.
