1.  Peer review now required for Sole Proprietors performing Attest Engagements

Posted 11-01-2017 13:14
Hi, All,

New York firms with two of fewer CPA's that provide attest services to clients and want to continue providing them are now subject to peer review every three years.  Does anyone here perform peer review for a firm that does ONE financial statement review?

What Sole Proprietors and Small Firms Need to Know About the New Peer Review Law
Now that Gov. Cuomo signed the peer review bill into law on Oct. 23, firms with two or fewer CPAs that provide attest services to clients and want to continue to provide them will need to undergo a peer review every three years.

The Mass Society of CPAs holds an annual "peer review" day in the Spring for firms that conduct ONLY compilations and reviews.

Thanks, Irene, I'm in New York so it likely doesn't apply to me

You don't have to live in Massachusetts to participate. This is just an alternative in case you can't find a local peer reviewer that you're comfortable with.

You really want to interview the reviewer before you engage them. For example, one peer reviewer told me that he strongly believes in CPA rotation. Well that's great for a larger firm with multiple partners signing off on reports.  Needless to say, I didn't hire him.
