  • 1.  How to claim a deceased dependent

    I attempted to e-file a 2019 return where the taxpayer claimed her disabled brother as a dependent. She totally supported him for the entire year until his death in December of 2019. The 1040 was rejected because his SS# has been locked since he is deceased. I am told to either have Soc Sec Admin unlock the SS# or to paper file the return. SS Admin said they do not unlock the SS#. 

    Is there something I should send along with the paper return so that I don't face the same issue?

    Since you are first filing in 2021 a 2019 tax return, that is why you were blocked from e-filing.  Attach a copy of the decedent's death certificate with the "paper return."
