Is anyone else having trouble getting through to the IRS this week? A client received a notice re 2021 1042 saying they needed to respond immediately. The notice indicates the form was never filed which isn't true according to USPS tracking from 3/2022. Monday I called the number on the notice and was passed around to 2 different people, neither of whom could help me with the 1042, but one claimed that the 2021 1120 was never filed either (not true according to my tax software which e-filed it) and then refused further discussion of the 1120 because it wasn't covered on the 2848. The other gave me another number to call about the 1042 and since it was too late Monday, I called it today (with a new 2848 that also covers the 1120) and an automated voice said call volumes are too high, try again another time. I called the tax practitioner hotline and was somehow routed to the individual team who then transferred me to business where I was disconnected after 40 minutes. I tried again later and literally the menu choices were different multiple times. When it finally offered an option for business and I selected it I was on hold for 45 minutes until I had to hang up and leave for another commitment. Then when I tried for a third time today I got the automated message saying that call volumes were too high and to try again another time.
I thought the IRS had been making progress with customer service? This 'service' is appalling. The notice is threatening that the client may "lose this credit" if they don't respond. It also says "If you need assistance, don't hesitate to contact us." Really?
I'm hoping tomorrow will be better (maybe a lot of people out because it's election day??). But wondering if anyone else was having similar issues.
