I had a client who had a resided in the NY with a green card
In January 2021 he left the USA and moved back to England and gave up
his green card. We filed his 2021 taxes.
During the summer of 2021 he died and starting in the fall of 2021 his
estate started to receive royalties for work he had done for the theatre industry
and the royalties are continuing into 2022.
His will left his assets to an GB resident and to an Canadian who lives in the US
Who is responsible for reporting the royalties for 2021 and 2022. Does a 1041 need to
be completed for 2021 and 2022,
    Thanks

A final 1040 , depending on dates of residence, possibly 1040 NR, needs to be filed for the income earned until date  of death and thereafter a 1041 is to be filed for all earnings that were received after date of death until distributed by the beneficiaries of his estate

I neglected to mention something,,, there are specific income exclusions allowed for those in the entertainment industry that are residing out of US,,,,  you might want to research those rules to see if that would be helpful on the income from time of leaving US until date of death... I have not done it in awhile so not sure if those rules have changed
