At recent MAP meeting there was discussion that faxing was not a secure means for transmitting confidential material i.e. 8879. My understanding concerning faxes, from IRS and AICPA Privacy Checklist, that issues related to fax was location of fax machine (was it in private location) and due diligence concerning confirmation of recipient fax number.

Any opinions on whether clients can be asked to return 8879 or other sensitive documents via fax to our offices?

We are using portal, secure e-mail and have begun to work with system to allow clients to electronically sign documents via computer and return electronically.

Thank you all and best of luck for the upcoming filing season.

Many thanks to Steve G and Bob G for prepping tax update for LIE.

If I posted twice, my apologies. Not sure if first time went through.
