At a recent MAP meeting it was brought up that faxing client information i.e. 8879 etc. was not secure. My understanding, from IRS as well as AICPA Privacy Checklist, was the only security issue with regard to fax machines is location of fax machine and due diligence in confirmation of fax number with recipient. More importantly, can we have clients return 8879 via fax?

We use portal for delivery and receipt of some documents; have worked with new technology allowing clients to sign documents electronically i.e. on their computer or phone which is allowed by IRS for this filing season; and use secure email. Client still needs to return docs to preparer.

Any opinions on whether or not to allow clients to return documents via fax?

Many thanks to Steve and Bob for preparing tax update for LIE. Gentlemen, great job!!!
