    Hi all,

Any recommendations for remote access to a client's computer for reaching/working on QuickBooks data files?

There are services that host Qbooks files, I have seen others using Windows remote access feature, and other services such as Logme in or GoToMyPC. Any thoughts, pros or cons would be appreciated.

    TY

You can also try using Windows RDP (remote data connection).  I used it for a client, and it worked well.

    hi rob,

Very interesting topic, as there are many products to choose from.

some questions I might ask in making a decision is:

how long will you be in that computer. for instance, I prefer accessing it for a moment, and then sending myself an accountants copy.   My preference for this, is that I prefer to work on my system, and then send it back to my client when done. Other related services such as printing etc.. are already configured.

if your time there is momentary then any of the products work well.... I happen to use Team viewer... it is free and no hassle for the client to install.  Very similar to go to my pc, or log me in.....

but if you are intending on working in a clients system for an extended period I strongly suggest  programs like simple start, or remote desktop.. this is because the interface is full screen and it appear and FEELS like you are at the clients terminal.    Remote desktop again is free, but requires port forwarding configuration of their router.... not hard, but slightly invasive.

Another very important question is , are u going to share screens with your client as opposed to just get your work done.

    uy

if you are going to share and you are going to be in there for a while, again I would point to simple start, but it s not free.

as far as hosting goes, these seem to be a server where you buy the right to be made a user and have access granted. they are terminal servers.

I have my own terminal server, and if you would like a walk thru, my pleasure. you access it with Remote desktop and you are in... Right networks is the preferred vendor of quickbooks for this platform.

feel free to call if you would like to discuss any of the above in greater depth.  or just post it here...

This is very useful information.  Thank you for sharing.  Working remotely from Florida has forced me to look into new ways to access client data.

Today I had the displeasure of a client giving me access to their Quickbooks online. Had not used it in quite a while and it is very slow. I have been testing Xero, which seems to be a much better platform than Quicbooks. ------------------------------------------- Robert Brown ROBERT N. Ladies and Gents,
There is another alternative to consider.  You can host the QB Windows application in the cloud.  Then you and your client can access QB from a common secure web portal. Real time collaboration, no files to transfer, no waiting to visit the client to update QB, no need for GoToMeeting or or PC anywhere.  This way you get to use the QB Desktop application you prefer and get all the benefits of the cloud. My colleague in LI provides this service and he will set you up with a free trial (create portal and activate one QB client) for free. Setup time is minimal (just upload your QB file ONCE). Contact me for more info. Welcome to the cloud.

I use QuickBooks online for about 10 of my clients, and I have nothing but great things to say about it.    When client grants you accountants rights, it groups all your clients together with your 1 individual log in.   (so you don't need 10 ID's and passwords with all the clients login's).

I don't see much of an internet delay at all, and I know it would be less of a delay than a "logmein" type situation where you are going through the internet to remote access someone else's computer.

Any new clients that need accounting software I push to use QB online as its extremely easy for me to log in and work on their closings, payroll tax, sales tax, etc...and also easy to answer questions they might have without a site visit...and I think its only about $12 a month for the service.
