I have a client who is having a NYC residency audit for 2017.  The audit started in October 2020.  NYS is asking me to sign a consent form extending the audit and assessment period for 2017 to October 2023.  This seems excessively long.  Does anybody have any experience with this?  Can I push back and try to shorten the extension period?
    Thank you.

Yes.  That is very long.  It may even be a typo.  You can push back. They usually add an additional year after the expiration of the original statute.
