    I'm in Nassau
I need to hire a new bookkeeper who I expect to know QuickBooks Online, payroll tax preparation, and sales tax preparation.
Knowledge of preparation of basic 1040s would be a plus.
I'm getting applicants who are asking $35 to $40 an hour.
Am I out of touch or should I be expecting this to be the going rate?

Quickbooks Live is paying up to $25/hour and they also include full benefits like Healthcare and 401k Access.

The following does not directly answer your question but may help explain why you are having a hard time finding QB Proadvisors or similarly experienced Bookkeepers.

Although I too am a CPA and a Certified Quickbooks Pro Advisor, the market for those purchasing my Bookkeeping Services are sometimes as low as $40/hour based on the fact they can get a lower rate from a NON-CPA Quickbooks Pro Advisors.   Most have a CPA, they really need a Bookkeeper.  So, since I have some extra time, certainly a few extra hours a month, might as well make it productive.

So that implies if you are trying to pay only $25 to anyone who is a Quickbooks Pro Advisor, most can get the same or a better rate on the open market. And they control their time.

What I am usually able to do is to convert those pure Bookkeeping clients to a fixed monthly fee of perhaps $250/month and am able to pick-up some additional hours/flat rate billing for advanced training, setup, and wait for it: General Consulting as an actual CPA.  :-)
