My client just got a desk audit questionnaire in which the response page has a series of questions about whether a paid preparer was used, name of tax preparation business and address, and the fee paid. Other than the fee information,
my information is printed on the NYC 208 form.

Not sure what this has to do with their concern about the tax matter asked about( NYC 208).

I see that the version of this page was updated 1/2017 while the other pages were dated 4/2013.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what's going on here?

Based upon the Small Firm MAP meetings that many members attend  it looks like this has become standard operating procedure for NY to request information on the paid preparer of the tax return.  I agree, we sign the tax and show our info on the signature page of the tax returns, but we have all seen tax returns that are unsigned and say self prepared tax returns that were not self prepared.

I assume that they are also looking for trends in that if the tax return for example  shows unreimbursed business expenses that are not valid they may look at other tax returns of the preparer.  In addition I also assume they are looking at our fees to see if they are too high and the tax refunds are overstated and that is why the preparation fees are high.

My client just forwarded to me the same type of questionnaire from NYS. Client's NYS return took a large credit for CT. Tax on CT. source income. There must be some program targeting NYS preparers for "questionable" returns?

NYS is looking for "Self-Prepared " tax return preparers  who got paid and did not sign the return.

    Hi Don,
A client of mine got a similar request from NYS (the tax preparer info) along with a request to forward the W-2s and 1099s that had state/city withholding. I thought this very strange because all the information of the withholding is on the IT-2s and preparer information - me - is on the return.
    There were 16 W-2s.
