The National Conference of CPA Practitioners (NCCPAP) Delaware Valley (Philadelphia Region) Chapter is pleased to announce its 40th Anniversary Silver and Bronze Award Winners. Edward P. Caine, MBA, CPA, CFF, CITP, CGMA of Bryn Mawr, PA, is being recognized as the Silver Winner, awarded to the Chapter member who has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to NCCPAP and the CPA community. Mary F. Bonawitz, PhD, CPA of Orwigsburg, PA, is being recognized as the Bronze Winner, awarded to the Chapter member considered to be influential as a leader and mentor in the CPA community.

Silver Award Winner:
Edward P. Caine, MBA, CPA, CFF, CITP, CGMA

Ed Caine, Managing Partner of EP Caine & Associates CPA, LLC, is a long-time member of NCCPAP. He was a member of the North New Jersey Chapter prior to developing the Delaware Valley Chapter in 2011, where he currently serves as President. Having grown his practice on the East Coast, Ed has leveraged his many contacts to develop the popular Blank Rome Tax Update Conference, a CLE and CPE credit event held annually in Philadelphia and New York City. Ed’s involvement in all things tax related has evolved into being a member of the executive committee for the Long Island Tax Symposium, the largest tax and A&A (accounting and auditing) conference on the East Coast, where he is still involved as a workshop leader. He is a member of the Executive and Planning Committee of the annual Working Together Conference (an annual all-day event) designed to apprise CPAs and EAs on the latest topics and issues that may impact their clients. Ed serves on the NPL (National Public Liaison) committee and has held various offices at the national level of NCCPAP.

As an avid volunteer, Ed serves on numerous boards, including Golden Slipper Club & Charities (as a Past President), is in his 10th year as Chair of the Audit Committee for Radnor Township, PA, and is the only CPA to serve on the Board of the BNI Foundation. He is a member of both the American Institute and Pennsylvania Institute of CPAs (AICPA and PICPA) and has participated on the National Council of each. Ed is a Past President of both the Temple University School of Business and Management Alumni Association and Main Line Reform Temple of Wynnewood, PA. Notably, Ed was appointed to and served on President Clinton’s Roundtable on Race Relations in 1997-98. Ed is a graduate of Lehigh University and Temple University.

Bronze Award Winner:
Mary F. Bonawitz, PhD, CPA

Much of Mary’s career has been spent as an educator and mentor, having been an accounting professor at The Pennsylvania State University Schuylkill Haven, PA campus for almost 15 years. According to Mary, “I’m most proud of the work I did with my students—who are primarily from the inner cities (New York and Philadelphia) and who never had the opportunity to receive the one-on-one attention necessary to develop their careers. Even though I’m retired, I still mentor many of those students today. We did important work, having given students the opportunity to rise above where they were born to advance themselves.” Mary was invited to a DE Valley Chapter meeting several years ago and was so impressed with the members and the presentation, that she joined NCCPAP that first night.

Mary holds a PhD in Accounting from Florida International University in Miami and a BS and an MS in Accounting from the State University of New York at Albany. She is a licensed CPA in Pennsylvania, New York, and the US Virgin Islands. She was the first woman admitted to partnership with Brammer, Chasen and O’Connell, CPAs, PC in the US Virgin Islands. In addition to her accounting career, she has almost nine years of consumer and commercial banking experience with Chase Manhattan Bank and Vermont National Bank.
